Full Stack Engineer

We’re looking for full stack engineers who will support our vision of empowering educators to do their best work every day!

We’re on a mission to help school district administrators improve operational efficiency and gain insight into their most critical school business processes. Our platform enables school districts to bring their paper-based processes online, track those processes and unlock the data currently trapped on paper forms. Come do the best work of your life here at Informed K12!

What it’s like to work here:

We work in small, nimble teams of 2-3 engineers. Projects that each team takes on range from real-time search and export tools, database and server optimization, or building our front end system. Teams rotate regularly so you'll be working with different people every few sprints.

We're proud of our ability to be full stack. We all have preferences for different parts of the stack, but we believe we're all responsible and should be empowered to improve our entire platform. This commitment also encourages us to grow in areas we're less familiar with.

We take code quality seriously and are constantly improving our codebase. Every project we work on has dedicated time to address tech debt and we prioritize code quality initiatives on our product road map. Oh, and we never ship code without writing a full suite of tests (don’t worry, we’ll help in case this is newer to you)!

We work with a solid set of technologies, but are always learning new ones. Our current stack is a mix of Ruby (Rails, RSpec, Capybara) and Javascript (React, Redux, Jest, Enzyme) hosted on Heroku / AWS. We also spend every other Friday as a “hack day” to play around with new technologies, contribute to open source, or build tools to improve our workflow.

We strive for light and flexible processes. Each team decides how they’ll get work done, but we try to ensure that working solo, together, or even remotely are all equally effective. Daily standups, sprintly retrospectives, paired programming, randomly assigned code reviews, and “mob reviews” of larger changes are some of the practices we use (but are always refining!).

We believe that making great products requires collaboration and empathy. Not only do we work closely with our product and design team, we make it a point to pay regular visits to  our customers. To better understand the challenges our customers are facing, we spend time on the front line with our client success team helping customers get through gnarly issues.

We are focused on creating a great work environment. Most of all, we try to foster an environment where honest feedback, respect for each other, and personal and professional growth is valued. Everyone of us should feel comfortable bringing our truest self to work.

What we’re hoping you’ll bring:

  • Some prior programming experience and exposure to (or a willingness to learn) best practices for architecture, data structures, testing, and web development.
  • Genuine curiosity and problem solving nature – it brings you joy to chew through difficult technical problems and develop simple, clean code and architecture for complex needs.
  • Appreciation for clear, thoughtful articulation and effective writing to rally teams – both technical and non-technical – around your ideas and objectives.
  • A friendly, collaborative, and open mindset with an interest in your own personal growth as well as the growth of others.
  • Enthusiasm for learning new technologies and approaches and, more importantly, sharing this knowledge to help level up your teammates.
  • Eagerness to help us craft solutions around how to scale a distributed SaaS application, design and build secure public APIs, and create real-time data visualization tools.

How we support our team members:

  • Competitive salaries and meaningful early stage equity
  • Open vacation, flexible schedule policy, and eight weeks paid parental leave
  • 100% company-paid health insurance premiums (medical, dental, & vision)
  • Life insurance, disability benefits, and 401K plan
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits and sunny office located in downtown San Francisco
  • Weekly Instacart order to get any snacks and drinks you desire
  • Annual retreats, quarterly offsites, and monthly company outings
  • Peer mentors and direct access to leadership team
  • Professional development budget to attend workshops & conferences
  • Your choice of tech setup – laptop, monitor, accessories, headphones

What happens when you apply:

One of our engineers will call you on the phone, ask you a few questions about yourself, and have a conversation about an interesting problem. Then, we’ll ask you to build a small web app using Ruby on Rails (don’t worry if you’ve never used Rails before, there’s a great free tutorial). This is an opportunity for you to showcase the things that you are passionate about and gives us the chance to learn a little bit about how you think and articulate solutions to problems.

If all goes well with the coding exercise, we’ll ask you to come onsite for an interview where we’ll architect a new feature, write a small ruby program, and extend your take-home project. Since we are a collaborative team, all of our interviews are done in pairs and we encourage you to ask questions along the way so we can learn what it’d be like to work together! Finally, you’ll have lunch with the team, and chat with the company’s founders to complete the day.

Ensuring a diverse and inclusive workplace where we learn from each other is core to our values. We welcome people of different backgrounds, experiences, abilities and perspectives. We are an equal opportunity employer and a fun place to work.
